Overview
This collaboration between Stanford University, the Paris-Est d.school, and Valeo (a Paris-based automotive supplier) developed a concept for a vehicle/driver interface to ease the transition to autonomous vehicles, with particular attention paid to older adult users.
Months of user needfinding, market research, and prototyping led to a final proof-of-concept that boosted driver awareness with panoramic video feeds and lighted signals around the dash and windshield to draw attention to hazards the vehicle has identified. The prototype was very well-received at the final exhibition.
Personal contributions
Throughout the course of the project I implemented prototypes of varying complexity including two haptic steering wheels, a Novint Falcon-operated dash menu, and concept prototypes for voice commands and console layouts. Prototypes were programmed with Arduino, C++, and OpenGL. I also conducted extensive market research in autonomous & assisted driving and driver interfaces while interacting regularly with users / stakeholders who informed our design.
For the final prototype, I designed the software interface and behavior of the windshield and dash alert system using C++ and Arduino. I was also responsible for material acquisition and the finances for the team. I sourced, gutted, and cleaned a scrap car cabin to prepare for the installation of our final prototype, which included a custom upholstered dashboard and a custom three-screen dash display.
